Marie Drago is a Doctor in Pharmacy and the founder of Gallinee. Launched in 2016 in London, the brand has been caring for the skin and its microbiome though innovative products across a number of categories.
Kimberly Capone is a Research Fellow and Lead Microbiologist for Skin Microbiome Research with Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. in Skillman, NJ. She received her B.S. in Biology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA, proceeding to earn her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. As a Research Fellow at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc., Dr. Capone directs investigations into the human skin microbiome in health and disease, particularly early in life and in individuals with sensitive or inflamed skin. In the course of her work, Dr. Capone has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and has participated in national and international dermatology conferences.
Jasmina Aganovic is the President of Mother Dirt, a line of biome-friendly personal care products focused on restoring and maintaining the balance of the skin biome. The technology is based off research from AOBiome Therapeutics, a biotech company focused on transforming human health through products that restore Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB), which current hygiene practices have stripped from the modern microbiome. She is a cosmetics and consumer goods entrepreneur who received her degree in chemical and biological engineering from MIT. Her career path combined her technical background with roles at consumer brands like LVMH, Fresh, and Living Proof.
The Speakers

Travis Whitfill
Travis Whitfill is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics. His background began in molecular biology and biochemistry, after receiving scientific training at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Duke University. He is the co-founder of several additional startup companies, including a Connecticut-based microbiome company, Azitra Inc. He brings strong background in entrepreneurship and business, and is also a partner in a venture capital fund, Bios Partners, bringing experience in public markets, drug development, and venture capital investments.
His research interests are in pediatric emergency medicine and health policy and to improve pediatric acute care across the United States.

Dirk Loeffert
Dirk is co-founder of BIOMILLENIA and a senior executive of the Life Sciences industry with more than 20 years of experience in product development and commercialisation. After obtaining his Ph.D. in molecular genetics and immunology from the University of Cologne, Dirk joined QIAGEN where he was instrumental in building several new product portfolios at QIAGEN, such as QIAGENs enzyme and assay product portfolios. He represented in his former function at QIAGEN global product development as VP, Global Head of Product Development Life Sciences. In 2014, Dirk moved to Paris, France where he co-founded with scientific founders Dave Weitz (Harvard University, Cambridge), Rob Nicol (BROAD Institute, Cambridge) and Andrew Griffiths and Jerome Bibette (both ESPCI Paris, France) BIOMILLENIA.

Dr Annika Schrader
After finalizing her study of neurobiology at the University of Oldenburg, she conducted a PhD at the Beiersdorf AG in Hamburg, where she afterwards was responsible for the R&D lab “Dry aged skin”.
In 2013, she joined Evonik in the area of Innovation Management for cosmetic active ingredients, where she is now responsible for global marketing.

Trevor Steyn
Trevor is an organic chemist with a passion to explore new ways of treating skin and fighting ageing.
For more than 15 years his research on skin has taken a very different approach. He takes a broad, long-term perspective to anti-ageing and looks at every aspect of the skin, from its health to the external factors affecting it.
Esse was born in 2002 as a result of Trevor’s passion for the chemistry of Africa’s plants. His post-graduate research was about the extraction of active compounds from African plants. After discovering the potential of these plants in skincare products, Trevor founded Esse Probiotic Skincare.

Dr Marie Alice Dibon
Dr Marie Alice Dibon currently heads Alice Communications Inc. a consulting company, servicing various industries on strategy, business development, communication and innovation and established in 2000.
Before the creation of Alice Communications, Ms. Dibon spent 15 years in France and the United States in the beauty, pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Her experience ranges from product development to marketing, through regulatory affairs, business development and manufacturing.
Today Alice Communications focuses on promoting and deciphering science and innovative technologies with industry and consumers for the benefit of the patient, consumer or industrial actors.
Ms. Dibon holds a Masters in Industrial Pharmacy Institute of the Industrial Pharmacy Institute in Lyon and a Doctorate in Pharmacy from the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences of Lyon. She contributes regularly as an editor in the trade press on the topics of innovation, communication, science and technology, and their societal impacts

Rainer Simmering
Dr. Rainer Simmering is a Senior Scientist in the Corporate Microbiology group of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA in Düsseldorf. After finalizing his study of biology at the WWU in Muenster, he conducted a PhD at the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam, where he also stayed for another year as a Post-Doc.
In October 2000, he started at the Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, where he was working on the detection and function of the intestinal microbiota.
In 2003 he came to Henkel, where he worked, in the group of Hygiene Research, on different research projects, like the elucidation of the skin microbiota with molecular means. Since mid of 2009 Dr. Simmering acts as an internal consultant for the global Beauty Care business regarding all microbiological questions.

Bernhard Paetzold Ph.D
Bernhard completed his PhD in synthetic biology, working together in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry to engineer bacteria as a living pill. He is a scientific co-founder of S-Biomedic, and is leading the research and product development.
His passion is understanding the complex interplay of the bacterial communities that live within and on us. He is fascinated by the untouched potential of active compounds that are naturally produced everyday right on our own skin.

Catherine O'Neill

Audrey Gueniche Ph.D
Audrey GUENICHE obtained her Pharmacist degree and her PhD degree in skin biology more than 23 years ago. She is an expert on immunology and microbiology. Her main expertise is on skin topical treatment and food supplement for skin and hair health, especially using probiotics, natural extract and bacterial extracts. She is currently a senior clinical expert in LOREAL RESEARCH. She has a complete experience from the actives through vitro evaluations/ preclinical studies to clinical trials. Her passion is to always reinvent evaluation and find new fields of area in term of actives to promote.
She has published over 110 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 5 chapters in books, 2 specials issues in journal where she was the invited editor. She presented in over 80 international congresses and additionally she was personally invited to give more than 35 keynote lectures.

Ingmar Claes, PhD
Ingmar studied bioscience engineering at the University of Leuven, graduated in 2007 and obtained a PhD in cell and gene technology in 2011. He has an expertise in the field of probiotics, its molecular mechanisms and the topical application of these beneficial bacteria to restore the human microbiome. As bioengineer and microbiologist, he feels that it is important to translate this scientific research into daily products from which people at home and the community can benefit.
In the context of YUN, he is closely working together with the Department of Bioscience Engineering of the University of Antwerp, the Lab of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology of prof. Sarah Lebeer, the Lab of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy of prof. Filip Kiekens, prof. dr. Julien Lambert (dermatology) and dr. Gilbert Donders (gynaecology, the University Hospital of Antwerp).
He has experience with leadership in multiple R&D projects and he held a managing role in YUN’s R&D projects of the Flemish Institute for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Research in Industry (VLAIO). YUN’s current range of probiotic products and therapies were developed under his supervision.

Nigel Lawmon
Nigel Lawmon joined Feelunique as Commercial Director in 2015, and now has over 22 years retail experience including department store, travel retail and speciality retail, including 17+ years in the beauty industry.
Nigel’s expertise quickly enhanced Feelunique’s business commercially and enhanced the brand offering, that has significantly increased its sales.
Prior to joining Feelunique Nigel was Managing Director of The Fragrance Shop and has previously held leadership roles at Debenhams and Alpha Retail/World Duty Free.

Chris Gummer
After 21 years as a senior technologist with Procter & Gamble Research & Development, Chris is now working for his own consultancy (Cider Solutions).
He has extensive experience in copy claim development and claim substantiation with some of the world’s leading consumer brands. His experience ranges from fundamental research, hands-on development of data and methods, through to copy development and product credentialing. Importantly, he has extensive experience in working with the Clearcast (formerly BACC) and the ASA from the position of an advertiser. He is a widely published and quoted author.

Dr Chris Callewaert
Chris received his PhD from Ghent University in Belgium. He is now a postdoctoral research fellow in the Knight lab at the University of California, San Diego. He investigates body odor and the characteristics of the bacteria living in the armpits, skin, clothes, washing machines and homes. He is the first to undertake bacterial transplants to solve underarm body odour.

Mark Offerhaus
Mark Offerhaus is founder and CEO of Dutch biotech Micreos. The company's endolysin technology, marketed under the Gladskin brand, enables targeted killing of unwanted bacteria while preserving the microbiome.
Before starting Micreos, Mark worked at ING for over ten years, including 5 years in Japan.

Daniela Pinto

Larry Weis
Larry Weiss is the CEO and Founder of Persona Biome, a San Francisco skin microbiome company. Previously, he was founding Chief Medical Officer at AOBiome where he formulated AOB-101, the first live topical biotherapeutic and ran the first successful virtual clinical trial. He also developed the Mother Dirt cosmetics including AO Mist, the first live skin probiotic. He has an extensive background in natural products chemistry, microbiology, medicine, biophysics, and pharmaceutical and cosmetic product development. He has an MD from Stanford University, and a BS in Biochemistry from Cornell University. He has over 20 patents and is published in the areas of chemistry, electrophysiology, clinical pharmacology, and the microbiome.

Olga Francino Marti
Ph.D. in Genetics from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) with broad experience in molecular biology and animal genomics. Project Management and Innovation at the Molecular Genetics Veterinary Service (SVGM) of the UAB since its creation in 1996. Founding partner of Vetgenomics (2011), a technology-based company focused on genetic diagnostic and genomics.
With extensive experience in the design and implementation of new methodologies of genetic analysis as well as to their valorization. Responsible for numerous agreements and projects with companies of the pharmaceutical and agrigenomics fields and currently working in national and international collaborations on infectious diseases, pathogens, and microbiome characterization with NGS.

Harald van der Hoeven
Harald van der Hoeven started to work in personal care in 1999 where he specialized on R&D and formulating of skin care cosmetics.
In 2006 Harald joined CLR in Berlin and took over as Director R&D. Since May 2013 he is Technical Marketing Director at CLR, involved in both R&D and technical and scientific support of CLR's customers.

Sabrina Okombi
Sabrina has a background of Pharmacist, completed by a PhD in medicinal chemistry.
During 8 years, she held a position of project manager, and developed several models for the evaluation of the biological efficacy of active ingredient for cosmetic applications.
Since more than one year, she has been leading projects and an innovation platform dedicated to the skin microbiota and their application in skin care.

Marisa Meloni Ph.D
Marisa Meloni got a PhD in Drug Delivery and Cutaneous Bio-physic at Renée Descartes University, Paris V (France). Thereafter, she was in charge for research and innovation within the dermo-pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry for 15 years. During that period, she also was contract professor of safety assessment and technology of cosmetic products at Milan, Salerno and Padua Universities.
In 2001, she created VitroScreen, a research laboratory committed to in vitro science that has the mission to be a reference partner for companies approaching in vitro alternatives, providing in vitro pre-clinical efficacy and regulatory toxicological services.
At VitroScreen she has developed “mechanism based experimental models“ on 3D reconstructed human tissue models for active ingredients and finished product testing: this approach better mimics the in vivo skin and epithelia response taking into account the dynamic of the biological response. VitroScreen is GLP certified and a member of the EU-Netval national reference laboratory network.

Peter Bogaert
Peter Bogaert is a managing partner of the Brussels office, and has a broad European life sciences practice. He has detailed regulatory expertise under EU and national laws, handles legislative and other policy assignments and provides strategic advice. He also represents life sciences companies before the European Courts in Luxembourg and in local litigation in Belgium. Mr. Bogaert's practice covers pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, special foods and feed, cosmetics and other consumer products and he represents numerous innovative life sciences companies, including start-ups, as well as several industry associations.
