This talk will consider some key questions organizations should ask before deploying PETs as part of their data work flow.  Examples from NIST's Collaborative Research Cycle will demonstrate the tension between data utility, fidelity, and privacy of synthetic data releases with specific regard to the difficulty in modeling diverse subpopulations.

PANEL: How PETs Enhance Data Governance and Accountability, Helping Achieve Business Success

This session will detail best practices and considerations when developing, procuring, and deploying Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs). Proper governance, accountability mechanisms, and vendor management are all key to the responsible adoption of PETs, yet few companies have experience developing robust procedures for managing an inventory of PETs. The FTC has already opined in a blog about potential future enforcement actions where companies could mismanage PETs, particularly concerning multi-party computations. We hope to provide an in-depth discussion of PETs governance to spur the thoughtful adoption of in-house and third-party accountability procedures so that companies understand how to leverage these nascent technologies without risking further regulatory scrutiny.

Prior to this, Ian specialized in Intellectual Property and data protection at Mertzel Law PLLC, where he navigated complex legal landscapes to protect IP and data compliance. Ian has also worked as a manager, and high-performance compute systems administrator, at Rutgers University.

Ian holds a JD from Seton Hall University School of Law as well as a Masters in Cybersecurity and Bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and Political Science from Rutgers University. His academic research includes publications on Product Liability Applied to Automated Decisions, Client-Side Malware Scanning In 802.1x Network Authentication, and AI & Machine Learning in Anomaly Detection.
